I also like to come up with ideas for gifts for family members. I also have included some of my writing but not all of it. Just a little rambling sometimes. When I was a child I loved to visit my great aunt in Somerset Kentucky. So many wonderful memories come back when I think of that time.Somerset Stitcheryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04162872580429156919noreply@blogger.comBlogger86125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4902972686808210071.post-24822766316856230362017-10-05T21:27:00.000-05:002017-10-05T21:30:43.969-05:00Fair Time Is Here Again!

I have been working on several things for the fair this year.

The first is an scarf that is made from Unforgettable, an acrylic yarn. It was a little fussy to work with but the colors turned out wonderful! I had made a hat last year from the same yarn for a present for my daughter for Christmas. This will be a present for her this year as well after the fair. I used the icicle pattern from http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/icicle-9 by Brenda Vanlerberghe

I also made a little pumpkin hat with mitts and diaper cover. This is made from Red Heart Super Saver. I used several different patterns to come up with this set. For the hat I used http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/little-sapling-newborn-hat and for the mitts I used http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/little-sapling-newborn-scratch-mitts For the leaf on the hat and diaper cover I used http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pumpkinhead-slouchy-hat The diaper cover can be found at http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/wool-diaper-cover-soaker---knit

My grandson's favorite color is orange and he loves Pokémon and emojis. So this year I searched the internet and found some graphs for beadwork on Kandi to make his hat and scarves. I also found all kinds of bead patterns on pinterest that can be worked as knitted projects.... He was so excited to see Pikachu. The only thing is I need to check my gauge for next year he has grown so much this year. This color combination while bright and worked with his color choices were a little much. But I enjoyed the searching, graphing, and of course the knitting. But especially the smile.

I had seen a Star Wars Scarf on Ravelry that started me thinking about making this for a Christmas present. I used several different charts to complete this scarf. I began with the idea from Ravelry http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/star-wars-double-knit-scarf and then started searching the web for other charts to incorporate with some of the charts from the scarf on Ravelry. I used one from Angelfire Www.angelfie.com/space2/such arts/crochet.html Then I found a Darth Vader chart on Ravelry to add to it as well Www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/Darth-Vader-chart

I had decided to use only portions of the original chart because I was using a heavier yarn and different size needle which made the gauge different.

He was so happy when he opened his package at Christmas!
This is a Christmas present that I finished for my grandson. He is really into Pokémon and appreciated all the work that I put into this hat and mitts. The hat is based on the Pokeball Hat by Sasha http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pokeball-hat I also used the same basic pattern on the mitts.

At one point I wondered how many needles does it take to make one mitt when finishing the fingers.

I also found that if you are staying up late you may make two mitts for the same hand. But that was easy to fix I frogged back to the thumb and reknitted. Not a big deal

At this point I am working on a double knit scarf for him as well that will incorporate the same Pokémon ball on the end and have Pokémon in the center. Trying a new method of double knitting so will see how it works out.
I had over 60 hours of just knitting in the finished product. I am waiting to see pics of the wearer once the weather gets cold enough. I knitted this using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I know that I could have picked a high end wool but when I am knitting for something to be worn by everyday and to be washed quite often I prefer the acrylic yarn.

Full view of scarf

At the request of a family member I found this pattern on Ravelry and completed for a birthday present for her daughter. Once they received the package, her mother was so excited she couldn't wait for the birthday to open the box and gift it to her daughter. They were very pleased with the scarf. I used a tubular cast on to start the project. Then Kitchener stitch to bind off. I have since found another idea for double knitting and am working on a Pokémon scarf for my grandson
It was getting close to the wedding date when I decided that maybe I needed to make something special to welcome the bride into our family. This is the Uhura shawl found on Ravelry. I added tons of beads. At one point during the making of the shawl, a box of beads hit the floor so it was like 52 pickup except with 500 beads. But the end result made me happy. She was very happy to receive the gift as well. I also made her a pair of barefoot sandals by Chandi once I heard that she was going to be barefoot for the wedding.
I did enjoy making this shawl and it actually made up very quickly. You can see the barefoot sandals in the collage. I also added beads to the sandal pattern.Somerset Stitcheryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04162872580429156919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4902972686808210071.post-51246498865611714072016-05-01T13:32:00.001-05:002016-05-01T13:53:41.823-05:00Dr Who Scarf startedI am working on a Doctor Who Scarf. It is a double knit pattern from the Nerdy Knitter. I only have the first pattern done. This is to be a birthday present. The other side is white with blue.
This is the Mithril Vest that I knitted for my daughter. She had requested one after seeing the pattern on Ravelry. This is by Susan Pandorf of Sunflower Designs I purchased her ebook last year as a Christmas present for myself. There were so many beautiful designs it was hard to decide which one to start with. My daughter made that decision for me.

I am very proud of this project. It is made from merino superwash yarn and had over 500 beads on the front. I think if I made it again I would choice darker beads so they would show up better. But my daughter wanted to the color and beads as close to the original as possible.
They are both double knit. So the design is visible on both side of the scarf and the hat can be worn with either side showing. Word of advice if you are going to start a double knit project keep in mind it is like to making two projects and takes about the same time as making two. Also your gauge will be different so consider that if you going to make your own design. I found that when I started the skull hat that I was making a cowl instead of the hat because I figured the pattern using the gauge I usually get when using worsted weight and size 4 needles. Now I am on my way to start a pair of fingerless gloves to match the red and black in the set.
The dark mark I found on Ravelry http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/harry-potter-dark-mark-chart…/libra…/harry-potter-dark-mark-chart. The others are based on deathflake pattern and other skull patterns I have found on the internet. This will be a gift for my grandson. He is really into skulls. I wanted to add a spider to keep with the Harry Potter items but apparently he hates spiders. So stuck to the Dark Mark and skulls. I will be scouring for dinosaur patterns soon for the other grandson.
The school bell is ringing and the buses are making their way out and about.

I remember how empty the house always seemed the first day of school. How I had wanted just a day without baking, crafts, tea parties, picnics, listening to the arguing over the tv, and all the other little things they did all day. Then once that first day was here it was like I was lost.

Mothers with little ones who have the privilege of being able to stay home with them at least through preschool treasure those moments. They are gone so quickly.

The older I get the more I realize that my Aunt Ruth was right. The older you get the faster time goes.

Slow down, take your time. Some day you will wish that you could hold them in your lap again. To pass the day in the backyard picnicking. To know you could glance out your kitchen window and smile at their antics or rush out the back door to settle a dispute.

Although now it seems like summer lasts forever and you are as ready for them to go back as they are to get out of the house and start a new adventure, treasure it. Once it is gone, it is gone. This is one of the projects I have been working on. I had seen a couple of posts on facebook suggesting that I might want to try these. I now have some ideas for different types. These are actually designed to cover diapers and use short rows to add the extra space needed in the pattern to accommodate a diaper. I have seen different types and color combinations. But I am planning on trying my own design on the seat. I will be posting once I have the pattern thought out and a shorter version completed.Somerset Stitcheryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04162872580429156919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4902972686808210071.post-53120103689177116712015-04-02T14:02:00.001-05:002015-04-02T14:02:10.917-05:00Piney bushes

Well it has been awhile but I have been busy getting things cleaned up outside. I found that my Piney Bushes have survived another winter. I grew up calling these Piney Bushes but then I found that they were also known as Peonies. I suppose it is from whatever part of the country you have grown up determines what you identify them as being. I have 5 of these gorgeous plants in my yard at this time. The ones closest to the house seems to be spreading the most. I suppose that is because they are a little more protected. I can remember my mother had three of these in our yard separated by what she called Flags which if found later are actually known as Irises. It doesn't really matter what you call both flowers they are beautiful. I wil be posting more as they go through the season. I am planning on getting an Iris bed going in front of our house. I would like to start making some demonstration posts on provisional cast on, Kitchener stitch, knitting socks on circular needles.
I will be adding to my Etsy Shop today or at least that is the plan unless the snow on our receiver interrupts our service. I will adding the pictures and giving folks the option of ordering with custom colors. I have some ideas to make adjustments to the pattern to make them a little more unique.
On this baby sweater it has seemed to work very well. There is no seam on the inside and it looks like a continuous piece of knitting.

Shoulder seam done with Kitchener stitch

There was also a hood and I joined the seam using Kitchener stitch. This is how it turned out you can not really see where I joined the stitches of the row. This hood was added to the neckline and worked back and forth on a circular needle. When I reached the desired length I equally divided the stitches on the needle and pulled the stitches up to the ends of the needle and worked the Kitchener stitch to join.

I had decided because I had become a little strained with seeing so many negative posts on facebook that I would join knitting groups so my newsfeed would include beautiful pictures of other knitters completed projects. This idea has proved successful. I have viewed beautiful items from all over the world and have started conversations from knitters on other continents. I have found that I have made many comments on posts asking questions or wanting advice. So why no start posting them here as well?

Today I saw a question on using row counters. I use them constantly helps you to keep your place in your work. They also can be used to make sure socks are the same length. I have found them very useful in making sure the arms on my sweaters are the same length. I keep track of the rows in the body of the sweater once I have reached the length I want for the first piece then I don't have to worry about one being longer than the other. If I know that I am going to make a pattern again such as hats for children or myself I make a note of how many rows before the decrease so I don't have to keep measuring each time I remake the project.

I also use an app Knit Companion to keep track of my patterns and notes.
This time of the year brings back so many memories......
Hugh Christmas trees that came home on Thanksgiving weekend. So tall they had to be carried in and out several times to get the right height. Every piece of furniture had to moved around to make sure it could fit in front of the living room windows. Hearing my mother's statement of "Well, Paul" several times on that evening. Watching my father getting more and more frustrated with the lights, figuring out which bulb had blown and him making sure the bubble lights were lined up correctly on the tree so we could see them. Waiting for Santa Claus and making sure my father still thought I believed. Then my parents going Christmas shopping, but they couldn't go too early because my father would have to give us at least one present before the big day.....well actually it would be a present to enjoy and something new to wear to the family Christmas party.

The food that was prepared in that old country kitchen....my father's ham, Aunt Matt's pecan pies, my mother's chocolate pies and lemon pies with meringe topping toasted a golden brown, the several kinds of dressing (ham and oyster)......But mostly everyone being together and being happy. Just enjoying each other.....

Then the family Christmas party.....Grandma and Aunt Mildred's homebaked cookies, Uncle Don's ham, my father's baked beans, my mother's banana pudding, Aunt Geraldine's fruit cake, There again everyone just being together. Every child knowing they were going home with presents. Grandma's gently presence that brought everyone together.....Sometimes I miss her so much. These are the hats that I knitted for my grandsons for Christmas. I incorporated a pattern for a Sock Monkey hat by Nicole Montgomery, a dinosaur design that can be found at www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dinosaur-chart , and a minecraft chart www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/minecraft-inspired-hat I also found the skull pattern and the large minecraft online. I am looking forward to seeing their faces when they open their presents on Christmas Eve. These hats were knitted in the round on two size four circular needles. I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn.
If you have become accustomed in knowing that this was a place you could go and feel welcome and safe. Suddenly, due to changes in life it no longer is a safe harbor, a place to go and feel at home. There are times when it is best to walk away.

This is a hard lesson at times. One that I should have become accustomed to over the years, but it doesn't make it any less bothersome. I just got off the phone with one of favorite cousins. Suddenly, the sounds of yesteryear are there. We spoke of how much he thought of my dad. Just the voice brings comfort, warm feelings. Good memories..........Somerset Stitcheryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04162872580429156919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4902972686808210071.post-29584859403179139282014-08-25T09:13:00.002-05:002014-08-25T09:13:49.040-05:00Baby set work in progress

This is a small baby set that I am working on. I have started the hat and still have the booties to make to go along with it. Since it is a newborn size I will probably use the stitch pattern to design a pair of baby mitts to go with.
This is a shawl that I finished recently. I was going to add to a small shop in one of our local stores. This is the first shawl that I have designed. I had found the shell pattern in a pattern book and added it to the design.

This is when it was a work in progress.

As you can see there is a slight variation of color. I had accidently picked up a different shade from the bin at the local store. But it did work out. It was a slightly deeper shade of the soft green.

This is the leaf edge stitch that I added to the live stitches to finish the shawl and this is the first time that I had used this type of finishing. The little lump sitting on the middle of the shawl is a little rabbit that I made for my grandson out of the yarn that was used to knit this shawl.Somerset Stitcheryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04162872580429156919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4902972686808210071.post-37174763646275001182014-08-21T06:39:00.002-05:002015-03-19T21:39:31.012-05:00Live, Love, LaughOur family recently lost a very special person. When I looked around her home I saw these words in so many places. Live, Love, Laugh.......

She was so cherished by so many. She touched so many lives. A very bright light went out.

If there is one thing that comes from her passing, I hope that we all realize how quickly even the brightest light can be extinguished.

When I walked into her home for the first time I felt how empty it was. I kept listening for her footstep, her quick wit, her beautiful smile, her warmth. My heart broke for her husband and her children. I felt devastated and alone.

But by the time we were leaving, I could feel her there still loving all of us. She had finally released her love to come showering back over us. She will still be in so many places.

We do need to follow her advice of Live, Love, Laugh. We need to remember the good times. Keep her memory alive and let the soft, gentle light be a reminder that she may be gone but she is still loving us.
